Celebrations of 650 years of the Anglo-Portuguese Alliance. Programme 6-15 July 2022

Portugal-UK 650 has the High Patronage  of His Excellency the President of the Portuguese Republic and the Royal Patronage of His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales
Events take place between the 6th and 15th of July, in Braga, Vizela and Tagilde, as well as in other Portuguese cities

The 10th of July 2022 marks the 650th anniversary of the Anglo-Portuguese Treaty of Tagilde, signed by King Fernando I of Portugal and the delegates of João de Gant, Duke of Lancaster and son of King Edward III of England, and which led to the signing of the Treaty of Peace, Friendship and Alliance, sealed in St. Paul’s Cathedral, London, on June 16, 1373, by King Edward III, of England, and by King Ferdinand and Queen Leonor , from Portugal, which remains in force to this day.

With the premise of celebrating the oldest diplomatic alliance in the world and taking the texts of the treaties as an inspirational basis, the Portugal-UK 650 initiative, together with a hundred partner entities, has been promoting a set of research, education, cultural and cultural activities. , cooperation and social, in order to transmit these values ​​to the generations of the world today – peace, friendship, truth, fidelity, constancy, sincerity, kindness and solidarity.

“There shall henceforth be among us a true, faithful, constant, mutual and perpetual peace and friendship, union and alliance and leagues of sincere affection” (Article I, Treaty of Alliance, London 16 June 1373) – appealing to the responsibility and commitment of each one.

Maria João Rodrigues de Araújo, president of Portugal-UK 650, explains that “it is important to continue with the work that we have been developing for the benefit of society. We wish to contribute to a safer and more fraternal society, with greater knowledge of its historical-cultural heritage, more international solidarity and a strengthened dialogue, cooperation and friendship between the citizens of both countries.”

The president of Portugal-UK 650 invites everyone to participate in this moment of celebration so relevant to the history of both countries.

Between the 6th and 15th of July, a series of initiatives will take place in Braga, Vizela and Tagilde. Some concerts are also scheduled for Lisbon, Sintra, Coimbra and Porto. To know:

“Dance in Perpetuity”, by the English National Ballet

Performance within the scope of the project “Dança na Perpetuidade”, which takes place in Portugal and the United Kingdom. This performance is a new choreographic and musical work that celebrates the founding values ​​of the Alliancw. The choreography is the result of the joint creative work, carried out over several weeks, by the artistic team of the English National Ballet with six dance schools in the city of Braga, who will interpret the choreography.The public is invited to participate at the end, in the “Theme of Celebration”, being able to choose the seated or standing version of the choreography, which they can learn through the tutorials available on the website and Youtube of Portugal-UK650. It is possible to participate in the dress rehearsal scheduled for the 7th of July, from 18:00 to 20:00.

Portugal-UK 650 is the initiative responsible for commemorating the 650th anniversary of the Luso-British Alliance in Portugal and the United Kingdom.

In addition to the celebration of the most important dates – the 650th anniversary of the Treaty of Tagilde (July 10, 2022) and the Treaty of London (June 16, 2023) – the Commemorations encompass a set of other initiatives, until 2023, in partnership with more than 100 Portuguese and British institutions, in the field of research, education, culture, commerce, cooperation and social issues.

To date, around 70 activities have taken place, the highlight of this year being the Commemorations of the 650th anniversary of the Treaty of Tagilde, scheduled for the 10th of July.
